Gladdening the Heart: A Day of Meditation

We know that light will again return to our corner of Northern New England, as well as to our hearts. Please join us for this daylong retreat. It will offer participants a quiet refuge, a time for softening the busy mind and for gently healing “the heart withered by pain.”

By practicing in sustained silence, and with the aid of gentle instruction, we develop the tools to glimpse the nature of our own minds. As our minds begin to calm and concentration improves, we lay the foundation for deep insight.

This day will include meditation instruction, alternating periods guided sitting and walking meditation, and time for question and group reflection. This retreat is appropriate for beginning and experienced meditators.

Doreen Schweizer, MSW, is a Founder and Guiding Teacher of the Valley Insight Meditation Society where she has taught since the early 1990’s. Doreen has studied in the Vipassana/Insight Buddhist tradition for over 20 years, and has had a meditation practice since 1969. She has practiced extensively with Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock teachers, as well as with nuns and monks of the Western Order of the Ajahn Chah Thai Forest Tradition. In 2003, she completed the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Training. Along with being guiding teacher for VIMS, Doreen served as executive director and social worker for Hospice of the Upper Valley for many years, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice with an office in Norwich VT.

Cost: $25.00. Registration cost covers the expenses of Souhegan Insight Meditation Group. In this tradition, teacher “dana” provides support for the teacher. Please read about dana below.

Teacher Dana: “Dana” is the ancient word for generosity, or donation. In the Insight meditation teachers are not paid for their teachings as the teaching of the dharma (Buddhist teachings) is felt to be priceless. The support of the teacher depends on the open generosity of the students. In keeping with this ancient tradition, dana will be part of the practice of this retreat.
